- Balita Knits are wonderfull creations by the lovely Barbara Gaete who hails from Chile. She is a backpacker who is knitting on the road and currently resides in Brisbane.
How do you create your work.
I'm an experiential kind of person. I've been always creating things, and handicraft in general is my passion. If I choose to do things by hand, is because I like the original way of making things. Trying to be as far as possible from machines. I like it also because I feel it like a kind of meditation or therapy, and in the process of making something with hands, is when I can really connect with what I'm doing.
That's why I do everything by hand :Needle knitting, crochet knitting, and even finger knitting. Sometimes I surf on internet looking for new ideas, but even when I find something I like, I end up changing it when I knit. This is because I like to knit and design while I'm in the process, so depends on the day, and the inspiration I have, what I can make.
What inspires you to create?
Everything. People, art, culture, other artists, aboriginal art, etc. While I'm travelling, I've been sticking to a certain kind of things, like accessories, because I have to move, knitting on the road. But travel is also a good source of inspirations, not just because of the new things that you can see around you, but because of the variety of experiences where you can find new feelings and emotions to express.
What are your hopes for the future?
Well, like I said before, one of my motivations is to help keeping the original way of making things alive. Nowadays knitting is something that old people do, but youngsters rarely learn and not even think of knitting. So boring! But the more people see me, specially travellers, the more I get request for teaching class. And there's more people who can enjoy the feeling of wearing something made by themselves, or making a gift themselves.
I hope that with the time, more people can appreciate the difference of something made by hand and as a piece of art, with all the energy and dedication that the handicraft artist put on it when was creating, instead something made in massive production, full of alienation, rush, competition, production for profit, and of course, I have to say, unacceptable working conditions.
Name a few things that make you happy?
When people can recognize their own roots and culture, and keep it alive. When they can recognize themselves as part of it, and feel so proud of being that, so they could say it out loud, and defend it from everything. There's nothing more important than where we come from, and I think artists, we have the duty of showing people what are we, through the arts.
Who are some of your favourite Artists?
Victor Jara (writer and singer), and Violeta Parra (writer, singer and plastic artist), both icons of Chilean folklore, and they dedicate their lives to spread our culture, in different ways. I follow mostly Violeta Parra, because of her multiples skills, always giving messages behind her creations. She was famous in Europe, when in 1964 she exposed her embroideries and paintings in the Louvre museum.

I'll give you a Violeta Parra song “El rin del angelito”, which talk about our old cultural believes of what happens when a baby dies, and the images in the video (from the movie "Violeta went to heaven") show what they use to do, when they had a wake before the funeral of a baby.

Sandi Harrold
We have some wonderfull work in here by Brisbane Artist Sandi Harrold. There are greeting cards, childrens books, paintings and even playing cards. Here is some information on Sandi taken from her website:

How do you create your work.
My ideas pop into my head first thing each morning. I like painting, or drawing when I have all day – no distractions. Once almost finished I sit the painting where I can see it and make changes wherever necessary – or hose off the canvas if the painting isn’t amusing or the characters aren’t interacting as well as I’d like.
What inspires you to create?
My mind seems to want to make light of potentially tricky situations and I have always made up funny scenarios to help with various situations. I am an early childhood teacher and have three children of my own. When something amused or intrigued us I’d automatically concoct a story to share the funny moment. The only difference is now I ask the viewer to make up their own story to suit what they see in my paintings.
What are your hopes for the future?
I hope to hear good news from the publishers very soon about the five stories, I have written and illustrated with an aboriginal Elder. I hope to write and illustrate more children’s picture books. I sincerely hope my paintings continue to bring smiles to people who have a sense of humour and a desire to laugh.
Name a few things that make you happy?
My children.
Having King parrots fly into my family room and whistle to me from the top of a painting frame or back of a chair when I’m painting.
Watching a cranky serious face turn into a broad smile when they see my paintings!
Hearing from people who email me telling me my paintings cheer them on a daily basis. Some talk to them “morning chooks!” and “Bye pigs!” etc – gives me a laugh!
Who are some of your favourite Artists?
I don’t have any particular favourites. I love thought provoking paintings especially with children and animals with beautiful eyes.
I always ask who peoples favourite music artists are as I like to stick a clip at the end.
No music please with mine. I paint with only the sounds of king parrots whistling .

I was born and raised in the Queensland
bush, and now live in Brisbane. I have three amazing children. I trained
as a kindergarten
Teacher and an ESL teacher, presently tutoring children with special
needs. I
have a garden filled with King Parrots and a dog called Jack, who is
featured
in some of my paintings. I especially love
giraffes, chooks and emus.
I have
had some great successes this year including selling all six of my works
on opening night at Rochester Annual 6x6 Exhibition in New York.

Remito Art
Remito is a artist by the name of Renet Botha. Born and raised in
South Africa, she immigrated to Australia in '08 and is now based in
Brisbane's northern suburbs partaking in various Markets to sell her
work. It is very lovely work and would suit a lot of places.
How do you create your work.
I mostly paint with acrylic, oil and sometimes mix the acrylic and charcoal. I also make my own frames from recycled wood (demolished houses etc).
What inspires you to create?
Life inspires me, interesting people, movies, colors in nature, music, "old things with history or a story behind it"..
What are your hopes for the future?
My number one hope is for my three children to be happy and healthy always. They are my best friends. I also hope to have my own small little gallery/studio/house with my daughter one day soon.

Inventoria Designs
We have wonderfull creations by Merryn Standish-White of Inventoria Designs in the Gallery. Here is some information taken from her website:
Inventoria Designs makes attractive alternative accessories that are classically elegant with a modern twist! The unique products are hand-made from quality materials, and range in style from Steampunk to geek, stylish to cute and quirky!
Merryn is also always happy to work with you to create a custom order, and does take on larger sewing commissions too.
How do you create your work?
I work instinctively from my materials, having a general idea of the end creation, and then letting the fabric, colours or feel dictate the way the piece evolves. I love finding special pieces of fabric or charms that come together to make something special.

A laid back sunny day, and my little space at the @BrisStyle markets
A custom made cosplay outfit of Merida from Brave. Velvet dress and crinkled cotton shirt, custom-sized to the customer.
Long stretchy teal velvet dress, with zip at the back and ribbon attached sleeves, and neckline detail similar to the movie version. The white underneath is a lovely crinkled cotton shirt, gathered at neck and wrist, and long enough to make the big puffy sleeves.
A similar outfit in similar materials would cost about $150.
Three cute sets of kitty ears picked up today for some gorgeous burlesque gals:)

I hand craft all my pieces – the bows
and brooches are hand sewn from fine fabrics, the cameos I hand paint
and the cards are my own drawings.
I work from my little home studio,

A love of creating beautiful things
that will make people smile is what inspires me.
I have always needed to be creative in
some way, whether it is painting, photography or costume design, and
I now feel odd if I find myself sitting without having my hands busy

tones with metallic accents.

I hope to share my
works and passion for creating with others, and by so doing, grow my
little business of Inventoria Designs into a thriving concern so that
I can support myself by doing what I love.

of fantasty literature, Steampunk aesthetics and geek culture.

a lot of different music – from Nightwish to The Weepies to Belle
and Sebastien … but just lately I've been trying to find wedding
music, and have gone back to one of my all time favourite movies and
